We’re getting the full summer weather smorgasbord just in time for the summer solstice which occurs at 9:42 p.m. CDT Friday night.
A tropical warm front will spawn another round of nocturnal thunderstorms across parts of central and northern Minnesota overnight into early Saturday morning.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Storm Prediction Center has posted an enhanced (level 3 of 5) risk zone for most of northern Minnesota overnight through 7 a.m. Saturday morning.
NOAA’s High-Resolution Rapid Refresh model run Friday afternoon shows a line of storms popping along the warm front Friday evening and racing across northern Minnesota. The forecast model loop below runs between 8 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday.

Note the possible bow echo-like signature crossing northern Minnesota in the wee hours Saturday morning. If this develops, the potential for damaging winds increases.
Extreme heat warning
This weekend brings the hottest, most humid air mass of the year so far into Minnesota. An extreme heat warning is in effect for most of central and southern Minnesota this weekend.
Including the cities of Center City, Faribault, Little Falls, Red Wing, Cambridge, Chaska, St Cloud, Owatonna, Minneapolis, Rice Lake, Ladysmith, Princeton, Hastings, Osceola, Eau Claire, Blaine, Durand, Alexandria, Elk River, Sauk Rapids, St Paul, River Falls, Menomonie, Mora, Chanhassen, Chippewa Falls, Long Prairie, Stillwater, Monticello, Victoria, Shakopee, Hudson, and Glenwood

...EXTREME HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM NOON SATURDAY TO 9 PM CDT SUNDAY...
* WHAT...Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of 105 to 110 expected. Low temperatures Saturday night will remain in the mid 70s to lower 80s, providing little relief from the heat.
* WHERE...Portions of central, east central, south central, southeast, and west central Minnesota and northwest and west central Wisconsin.
* WHEN...From noon Saturday to 9 PM CDT Sunday.
* IMPACTS...Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Highs Saturday will approach 95 to 100 degrees across much of southern Minnesota. Heat index values will exceed 100 degrees Saturday. Cooler near your favorite Great Lake.
Sunday will be just about as steamy. Dew point this weekend could reach 80 degrees around southern Minnesota including the Twin Cities area. It’s almost impossible for your body to keep cool in that kind of tropical air mass.

Relief next week
Thankfully, this is only about a two-day heat episode for Minnesota. A cold front arrives by Monday with rain chances and much cooler temperatures and lower humidity.
