Hormel Foods has announced that Jeff Ettinger will return to the company as interim CEO, alongside John Ghingo as Hormel’s new president.

The Austin, Minn.-based company behind Spam, Planters nuts and several other brands on Monday announced that it has tapped Ettinger and Ghingo to assume those leadership roles when current president and CEO Jim Snee retires later this year.

Ghingo currently works as Hormel’s executive vice president for retail. Before joining Hormel, he held leadership positions at several other major food companies, including Hormel subsidiary Applegate Farms and Mondelēz International.

Ettinger is returning to the CEO role for a 15-month interim appointment. He held the job between 2005 and 2016. He currently chairs the Hormel Foundation and recently served about a year as the interim president of the University of Minnesota. 

Bill Newlands, chair of Hormel Foods’ board of directors, said in a statement that Ghingo and Ettinger have the right combination of company knowledge and food industry experience to co-lead during the transition. 

“The board has full confidence in John and Jeff’s ability to strengthen our business, deepen our relevance with consumers, and deliver lasting value for our shareholders,” Newlands said.

Ettinger and Ghingo will start their roles in mid-July.
