State Sen. Nicole Mitchell, who last week was convicted by a jury of burglary for breaking into her stepmother’s home, has resigned from her position.
Mitchell, a Democrat from Woodbury, had indicated after the conviction that she would step down on Aug. 4, as she finished up work and to keep her health insurance, which she said is key for her child.
But Friday morning, she sent a letter to Gov. Tim Walz, saying she’s resigning her District 47 Senate seat.
“Thank you to my family, friends and constituents who shared with me the issues they cared about and trusted me to work on their behalf,” she wrote in the letter. “It has been a true honor to serve the state of Minnesota and the community I grew up in.”
Mitchell, who had worked as a meteorologist for Minnesota Public Radio before running for the Senate, was in her first term.
Her resignation will prompt a special election for her seat. Another special election in the Senate is expected in the coming months, after long-time legislator Sen. Bruce Anderson died earlier this week.
