A Minnesota blood center has declared a blood emergency due to a shortage throughout the state. 

Memorial Blood Centers says the state’s blood supply has dropped below a two-day inventory. A seven-day supply is needed to meet the demands of hospitals and patients.

Memorial Blood Centers is asking for donations of all blood types, but the shortage is especially severe for types O negative and O positive. These blood types are vital for emergency situations and trauma care.

“We urgently need the community’s help to rebuild the blood supply and prevent this situation from becoming more dire,” said Kathy Geist, Vice President at Memorial Blood Centers. “Donating blood is one of the most direct and impactful ways to support our healthcare system and save lives.” 

There is an anticipated decline in donations over the summer due to vacations, summer break and weather that keeps donors inside. However, an increase in trauma cases has depleted the local blood supply. Minnesota is not alone in not having enough — this is a nationwide problem, but solving it requires donors locally. 

“Every time you hear a siren or see a helicopter overhead, there’s a chance that patient will need blood,” Geist said. “We need to make sure it’s on the shelves before they ever get to the hospital.”

Memorial Blood Centers is calling on community members to donate blood. Donors can schedule an appointment for blood or platelet donation at Memorial Blood Centers website or call 

Blood donors can donate every 56 days, and platelet donors can give up to twice per month. Before donating, contact the center to confirm your eligibility.
