When a tree falls in the woods, it could be turned into 

. The material can be made from wood, manure, crop residue or other biomass into a type of charcoal. 

“What we’re doing is taking about half that carbon in the tree and put it into a stable format that can last for hundreds to thousands of years,” said Jim Doten, a carbon sequestration program manager for the Minneapolis City Health Department.

That trapped carbon can then be planted into soil and improve crop yields, drought resilience and other potential benefits. 

 in Minneapolis is hoping to get more people on board for support of the product. 

The conference runs through Sept. 18 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
