October freeze: Coldest nights of the season so far ahead

The last of the Huttner Weather Lab dahlias are standing tough on this chilly October Wednesday afternoon.
But we’ve clipped most of the remaining October blooms.
A widespread freeze is likely, including the inner Twin Cities urban heat island core the next two mornings.
Temperatures will plunge well into the 20s in northern Minnesota Thursday and Friday mornings. In the south, low 30s will be common. (See the map at the top of this post.)

It looks like we may see the first 32-degree temperature of the fall season at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The coldest observed temperature so far at the airport is 39 degrees on Oct. 8.
We don’t have far to go to get to the freezing point overnight. On the map below, you can see the blue hues covering Minnesota with temperatures only in the 30s and 40s as of midday Wednesday.
Milder days ahead
Sunshine is gradually increasing from west to east across Minnesota as I write this post Wednesday afternoon. We’ll enjoy sunny skies the next few days, with gradually increasing afternoon temperatures.
Thursday will still feel chilly out there, but with much lighter winds.
Temperatures moderate further Friday through the weekend. One more round of golf. One more late-season boat ride? One more sunny stroll.
Highs will reach the lower 60s as we move through the upcoming weekend in the south and west.
Our next rain chance arrives next Monday and Tuesday. Right now the early read on Halloween still favors temperatures in the 40s with only slight shower chances.
