Krispy Kreme makes its Minnesota comeback this November.

The multinational donut and coffee chain closed its doors in Minnesota in 2008, though it still had many fans. An enterprising college student found success in 2019 driving to Iowa — reportedly where the closest Krispy Kreme is — to buy hundreds of donuts and resell them to Twin Cities-area customers. Now, the drive for fresh, warm donuts will be a bit shorter for many Minnesotans.

In a news release, Krispy Kreme announced it would open 

The Fridley store will sell donuts in store, via drive-thru, and through the Krispy Kreme app for pick-up or delivery. The 12,000-square-foot shop will also produce donuts for “select retailers across Minnesota.”

Krispy Kreme had previously planned to sell donuts at McDonald’s restaurants nationwide by the end of 2026, but 

the two companies decided to end their partnership in June

“We’re thrilled to return to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, a location where fans have been asking us to come back for nearly two decades,” Krispy Kreme CEO Josh Charlesworth said in a statement released Wednesday.  “This strategic location allows us to serve Minnesotans across the state, and we can’t wait to bring the most amazing doughnut experience imaginable back to the community.” 

Throughout its grand opening week, Krispy Kreme reports 120 guests will be randomly awarded a “celebration ticket” that will allow them to receive a dozen free glazed donuts every month for a year.

The Krispy Kreme store is located at 5696 University Avenue in Fridley. After its grand opening, the store’s hours are planned to be 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
