Minnesota's flu season is intensifying, as recent data released by the Minnesota Department of Health indicate that influenza cases nearly tripled between Dec. 7 and Dec. 21. 

The latest figures show that over 5,000 individuals in the state have tested positive for the flu.

Hospital admissions are also on the rise, with nearly 2,000 residents hospitalized statewide due to the flu. The highest hospitalization rates are among those ages 65 and older. Flu-related hospitalizations have increased slightly compared to this time last year, and, so far this season, there have been 23 influenza-associated deaths in adults.

While cases of COVID-19 and RSV remain lower than flu cases, health officials are observing an uptick in these viruses as well, including recent reports of respiratory illness outbreaks in schools.

Infants and young children are particularly at risk of severe illness from flu, COVID-19 and RSV, along with adults ages 65 and older, pregnant individuals and anyone with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease or a compromised immune system.

To protect yourself and others, and to reduce the spread of respiratory viruses, the Minnesota Department of Health recommends the following measures: wash your hands, wear a mask, stay home when you are sick and get vaccinated.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advise that everyone ages 6 months and older receive a flu vaccine each year.

Seasonal flu shots are readily available at local pharmacies, health care clinics and health departments throughout Minnesota.
