Another thaw Monday, then colder with an Arctic outbreak next weekend

It’s a classic January weekend across Minnesota.
We’re now entering the coldest two weeks of the year climatologically in Minnesota. Our normal high and low in the Twin Cities bottom out at 23 and 8 through Jan. 24. Then, our normal temperatures begin slowly climbing as we move through the last days of January into February. By Feb. 25, our normal high in the Twin Cities eases above 32 degrees once again!
Saturday’s snow showers and frigid breezes give way to a beautiful, classic January Sunday. We enjoy plenty of sunshine Sunday with highs in the 20s across most of Minnesota. But highs will reach the 30s in the southwest parts of Minnesota Sunday afternoon where there is little snow cover now.
It’s been a very mild January so far in our region. So far this month, temperatures are running between 5 (northeast) and 10 degrees (southwest) warmer than normal across Minnesota.

Another thaw ahead
Another wave of milder Pacific air washes over Minnesota Monday and Tuesday. Highs will reach the 40s once again in southwest Minnesota Monday and we may hit 40 in the Twin Cities with 30s north. By Tuesday, highs will peak the 50s in southwest Minnesota on Jan. 13!
Arctic outbreak next weekend?
A colder northwest flow returns next Wednesday into the following weekend. Highs Wednesday will fall back into the 20s across most of Minnesota.
We may reach the 30s again Thursday and Friday, but a couple of Clippers zipping through may produce some snow at times.
Next weekend looks much colder as Arctic air mass pours southward. It’s still early to be confident about the precise magnitude of the coming cold shot. But right now highs in the teens and subzero lows look likely for next weekend.
