Farmington in the southern Twin Cities region is dealing with a leadership shakeup this week, after the city's mayor resigned. Joshua Hoyt announced in a 

 posted Thursday that he was stepping down to focus on his mental health.

“This was not an easy conclusion to reach, but it is a necessary one,” the letter says. “I believe that leadership requires clarity, presence, and well-being, and at this time, I need to prioritize my health in order to heal and regain balance.” 

The letter does not provide further details about Hoyt’s health.

The decision comes after Hoyt engaged in a heated exchange with a resident and former city official 

. It began after the resident exceeded his time limit for public comment on a proposed data center. 

Council Member Nick Lien will serve as acting mayor. The city council is scheduled to discuss next steps March 2.

“We thank Mayor Hoyt for his leadership and wish him the very best,” reads a 

. “Our focus remains on continuing to serve the Farmington community with care, dedication, and transparency.”
