Two lawmakers want to introduce legislation to create oversight on autonomous vehicles in Minnesota. It comes as the autonomous rideshare company Waymo has set its eyes on the Twin Cities.

Sen. Erin Maye Quade, DFL-Apple Valley, and state Rep. Samantha Sencer-Mura, DFL-Minneapolis, say they want to create guardrails for any type of autonomous vehicle. Sencer-Mura said self-driving technology is a threat to the rideshare and trucking industry in the state. 

“There's a real concern about loss of good paying jobs. And then I've also heard concerns from constituents about the safety of Waymo vehicles on our roads,” Sencer-Mura told MPR News.

Self-driving cars like Waymo have had rollouts in warmer climates, including California and Texas. In November, the company announced 

 to test winter climates, but is not available to the public just yet.
