Muslims in Minnesota are observing the holy month of Ramadan, which involves fasting from dawn to sunset.
For some Black American Muslims, bean pie — a custard-style pie, similar to sweet potato or pumpkin — is a traditional way to break the fast, popularized by the Black nationalist movement Nation of Islam beginning in the 1930s.
This year, Ramadan overlaps with the pie-themed holiday, Pi Day — celebrating the mathematical number 3.14.
Might be a good time for a bean pie, right? Zainab Youngmark is the owner of Quiet Cat Bakery in Fridley, and she's expecting to make a few.
She spoke with MPR News guest host Lisa Ryan on Friday, the day before Pi Day.
