Organizers of Saturday’s planned No Kings rally in St. Paul say they expect more than 80,000 people to march and gather at the Minnesota Capitol.

The St. Paul event — featuring local officials and activists alongside nationally known figures such as Jane Fonda, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez and Sen. Bernie Sanders — is slated to be a flagship event on a day of thousands of gatherings across the country protesting Trump administration policies.

“Our goal is to continue to build a peaceful and nonviolent movement that gets us to the place where we have a healthy, functioning democracy, and communities and state and country where we can all thrive,” said Rebecca Larson with event organizer Indivisible Twin Cities.

It will be the third No Kings event across the country, and organizers expect it to be the largest.

Larson said Minnesota was chosen to lead the nation in this round of rallies because of the activism during the federal immigration enforcement surge in recent month.

“Minnesotans have really shown the rest of the world how people-powered movements can win and push back against wannabe kings. We want to tell our stories to the rest of the country and the rest of the world,” Larson said.

Saturday’s event in St. Paul is set to begin with three marches at noon — starting at Harriet Island, St. Paul College and Western Sculpture Park. Those marches will converge at the Capitol for the main rally beginning at 2 p.m.

Saturday road closures for No Kings Rally in St. Paul

Larson said Saturday’s event will have increased security to protect attendees. 

St. Paul Police Deputy Chief Kurt Hallstrom told MPR News Thursday they will be prepared for a crowd ranging from 50,000 to 150,000 attendees.

“We had the Women’s March a few years back that was the largest one that I’m aware of that we’ve had at the Capitol grounds,” Hallstrom said. “We had one last year that was large and that one was on a sad day for the state of Minnesota. And people still showed up for that. So I believe that this is going to be a big event.”

Hallstrom said upwards of 300 law enforcement officers will be on and around the Capitol grounds.

The first series of “No Kings” rallies 

 — with the main event in St. Paul happening just hours after former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were fatally shot at their home in Brooklyn Park.

Hallstrom added they won’t dictate routes or locations of the rally — those have been set by the event organizers — but multiple departments have planned for road closures along the march routes and around the Capitol grounds.

“If it gets any bigger than the Women’s March,” Hallstrom said, “I would say be prepared to be patient. Bring water and things to sustain yourself for a time. I know that the event organizers have brought in facilities to take care of bathrooms and things like that. But with that number of people, patience is going to be asked to win the day and be kind to each other.”
