At least 3 tornadoes hit southern Minnesota Monday evening

The Twin Cities National Weather Service Office sent survey teams into the field in southern Minnesota to asses Monday’s storm damage and tornado location on Tuesday.

The teams found evidence of at least three tornadoes. These were weaker tornadoes in open areas and thankfully caused relatively little damage.

Here are the preliminary results from the Twin Cities NWS.

At least three tornadoes occurred across southern Minnesota. Preliminary intensity results are EF-0 to low EF-1. We are continuing to work closely with local Emergency Management to determine the official tracks and ratings of each tornado.

• The first tornado occurred near Truman and tracked east towards Amboy at approximately 6:25 PM.

• Farther south around 7:20 PM, a tornado was caught on video by a trained spotter six miles W of Elmore.

• At approximately 8:05 PM, a third tornado was reported three miles SE of Matawan.

Damaging hail with anywhere from golf ball- to baseball-sized hail fell in dozens of locations Monday.

Severe risk moves south

The main severe weather zone has shifted south into Wednesday. A tornado watch covers most of Iowa into southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois Tuesday evening.

The next severe risk for Minnesota arrives Friday afternoon. It’s too early for timing and coverage details, but here’s the potential risk zone Friday.

Thursday will be the nicest day this week. Highs will push into the 70s south once again under sunny skies and lighter winds.

Right now the weekend looks windy and much colder with snow possible north Saturday.
