The mining industry is celebrating a win. Congress approved a bill Thursday to roll back a 20-year ban on mining near Minnesota's Boundary Waters.

The repeal was spearheaded by Minnesota Republican U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber, who represents the area where the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is located. "Mining is our past, present and future ... and the future looks bright,” he wrote on social media.

But some environmental groups opposed repealing the ban, including Friends of the Boundary Waters.

Renowned Minnesota chef Sean Sherman of the restaurant Owamni is on the board of the organization. He spoke with MPR News host Clay Masters about the impacts he’s anticipating the end of the mining ban will have on the region’s native plants and wildlife.
