Only about one third of Minnesota’s weather days were near average compared to other years. The other two thirds varied between exceptionally cold and exceptionally warm, according to climatologist and meteorologist Mark Seeley. 

With those warm and cold mixes throughout the month came noticeable weather shifts as well. Severe Weather Awareness Week starting April 13 was topped and tailed with bouts of intense storms. 

“Those dates brought severe weather with strong winds, hail and even tornadoes,” Seeley said. 

April wasn’t without it’s snowfall either. Minnesotans in Kelliher and Mahnomen in the northern part of the state saw over 20 inches. And by contrast, there were many Red Flag Warnings for wildfires in the western part of the state.
