Homes evacuated as Crow Wing County wildfire reaches 600 acres

The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office along with other state and local agencies evacuated some homes as a wildfire swelled Saturday evening.
According to news release from the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center, the Flanders wildfire 10 miles east of Breezy Point encompassed 600 acres and was zero percent contained as of 5 p.m. Saturday.
In an update Saturday night, the sheriff’s office said fire crews and law enforcement personnel would continue to monitor the wildfire through the night.
“Please continue to avoid the area and allow emergency responders room to work safely,” the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities closed County Road 11 between Crosslake and State Highway 6. The sheriff’s office said crews were working to evacuate areas east of East Horseshoe Lake Road and south of County Road 11. Other residents were being asked to be ready to evacuate if necessary.
The Crosslake Community Center was opened as a shelter for evacuees on Saturday night, offering food and a place to stay overnight.
The fire center said dry, windy conditions contributed to the spread of the fire.
The Flanders Fire is the second large wildfire in the northern half of the state this weekend. On the North Shore near Two Harbors, the Stewart Trail Fire started Friday and was estimated at 355 acres in size on Saturday night. Authorities said that fire was 30 percent contained.
Crews across northern Minnesota were kept busy responding to other, smaller wildfires on Friday and Saturday.
