Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin continues to pursue an appeal of his conviction in the 2020 murder of George Floyd. His attorney filed a notice this week with the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
The 50-year-old is serving concurrent sentences of about 20 years for his state murder conviction and federal charges of violating Floyd’s civil rights.
Late last year, Chauvin’s attorney filed a petition in district court, seeking to overturn Chauvin’s conviction. Among other issues, the appeal claimed that physicians who served as expert witnesses gave faulty testimony about the cause of Floyd's death.
Chauvin also raised concerns about the use of video evidence during the trial, and he alleged that police officials lied during the trial.
In May, Hennepin County Judge Paul Scoggin rejected Chauvin’s arguments. In the wake of that ruling, Chauvin’s attorney has now filed a notice of appeal with the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
Nearly three years ago, the same court rejected an earlier bid to overturn Chauvin’s state conviction.
