Severe weather potential Monday night into Wednesday

We are in scorching hot and muggy season across the state. Rain is back later Monday afternoon in the northwest, then it moves south toward Minneapolis and St. Paul near midnight.

There are several more rounds of rain ahead, and we’re heating back up next weekend.

Monday heat and storms

Monday is all about the heat across the state but we quickly transition into storm mode for northern Minnesota after 3 p.m.

Much of northwestern Minnesota is in a slight (level 2 out of 5) risk for severe weather later Monday. That area actually expanded a good ways east as of the latest update — meaning into Minnesota even more.

With drought conditions still plaguing parts of northwestern Minnesota and much of north-central Minnesota, rain is badly needed.

Storms will weaken during the evening as they move southeast, moving into the Twin Cities closer to 11 p.m. That is quite a long time — eight-plus hours — for a complex of storms to move across the state, so we’ll be tracking the line from town to town.

Even if you don’t get late night rain — and not all will — it’ll be soupy Tuesday morning. Check out the forecast highs on the paragraph below.

Rain again kicks off in northern Minnesota in the midafternoon. The training storms roll in after dark. MPR News meteorologist Mandy Thalhuber will have that flooding threat covered here.

This rolls into southeastern Minnesota early Wednesday morning, so many will sleep through this.

Another round should hit the Twin Cities around the evening driving commute Wednesday.

Things are a lot quieter after that as we’re mostly dry through the weekend — four straight days with sun!
