Isolated storms through the evening, stronger storms possible

We are in scorching hot and muggy season across the state. Rain is back later this afternoon in the northwest, then moves south towards Minneapolis and St. Paul near midnight. There are several more rounds of rain ahead and were heating back up next weekend. 

Monday is all about the heat across the state but we quickly transition into storm mode for northern Minnesota after 3 p.m. Much of the northwest end of the state is in a slight (level two out of five) risk for severe weather later Monday. That area actually expanded a good ways east as of the latest update — meaning into Minnesota even more. 

Storms will be moving NNW to SSE as the evening progresses and, yes, the storms will be weakening. We expect arrival towards the Twin Cities closer to 11 p.m. That is quite a long time for a complex of storms (eight-plus hours across Minnesota) so we’ll be tracking the line from town to town. 

Even if you don’t get late night rain — and not all will — it’ll be soupy Tuesday morning. Check out the lows and highs above this paragraph. Rain again kicks off in Northern Minnesota in the mid-afternoon. The training storms roll in after dark, and Mandy Thalhuber will have that 

Severe thunderstorm watch issued for northwestern Minnesota

This rolls into southeastern Minnesota early Wednesday morning, so many will sleep through this. Another round should hit the Cities around the evening driving commute Wednesday. Things are a lot quieter following this, as we’re mostly dry through the weekend — four straight days with sun! We are going to heat right back up, as the Rockies heat ridge slides to the east.
