Boundary Waters outfitters in Ely acted quickly to get their paddlers out of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness earlier this week as wildfires scorched the landscape. Permits are being refunded through Sunday.

Jason Zabokrtsky runs Ely Outfitting Co. He says this week’s fires are unlike anything he's experienced in the more than 20 years he's worked in the region.

“[Monday] was the most stressful day I’ve ever had as an outfitter,” he told MPR News host Clay Masters. “By a factor of about a thousand.”
