Duluth Mayor Roger Reinert says he wants to bring back police foot patrols downtown as a way to keep order and help people in need.
“When problems are at ground level, we need the enforcement and just the presence to be at ground level as well,” he told MPR News Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer.
Whether they’re badged officers or community service officers, Reinert said the patrols would build relationships with business owners and aid people in need.
Duluth has struggled through several high-profile public safety incidents this summer, including several shootings — one at Canal Park on July 6 and one involving a standoff with an armed man in the downtown area
Video of people fighting in the road at Lake Avenue and Superior Street just before Grandma's Marathon also went viral on social media.
While “Duluth remains a safe city,” Reinert said his downtown had dealt with issues similar to other urban center since the COVID-19 pandemic.
