Minnesota State University, Mankato, the second largest institution of higher learning in Minnesota, is facing a $22 million deficit heading into the new school year.

MSU Mankato is attempting to close the gap by cutting 60 positions via layoffs, early retirements or not filling already open positions. This all comes just a year after 

 drove the elimination of 87 degree and certificate programs. 

University President Edward Inch says rising operating costs, state funding that's not keeping pace and a decline in international student enrollment have combined to cause the financial struggle.

MSU Faculty Association President and professor Jim Dimock said that communication between unions is strong right now.

“For the first time in years, actually, the presidents of the biggest unions on campus are all meeting together regularly,” he said. “We are probably in the best place possible to really organize and push for alternatives.”

Dimock said that four faculty positions have been laid off but union members of 

, which represent general maintenance work, is seeing around seven layoffs. He also said he’s meeting with Inch at least once a month and a university provost twice a month.
