Snow northern MN into early Saturday; a quiet Sunday
A low pressure system will track through Minnesota and into Wisconsin overnight and early Saturday morning. Several inches of snow are possible in parts of northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale forecast model shows the expected snowfall pattern: The color chart on the lower right of the loop refers…
A warm and wet 2016; snow northern MN today and tonight
University of Minnesota meteorologist and climatologist Dr. Mark Seeley provided an interesting summary of Minnesota’s 2016 weather on Minnesota Public Radio this morning. Among the information that he shared with our listeners: Overall on a statewide basis 2016 delivered the 3rd warmest year in history to Minnesota (only 1987 and 2012 were warmer) and the 2nd wettest year…
Less wind on Friday; afternoon snow northern MN
We hit 33 degrees this Thursday afternoon at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. That’s 9 degrees warmer than our average December 29th high temp, but it didn’t feel very mild. Brisk winds gave us wind chill temps in the teens throughout the afternoon hours. Our Friday will be much less windy, but temps will be cooler.…
Windy with a few flakes today; possible Monday night snowstorm
A low-pressure system will bring snow to much of northern Minnesota Friday and Friday night. And much of Minnesota could see enough snow to shovel on Monday depending on the track of a coming low-pressure system.
Windy and cooler Thursday
Wednesday Today was our ninth consecutive warmer-than-normal day in the Twin Cities. The high was 36 when the normal high would have been 24. The sun was shining brightly for much of Wednesday from Mille Lacs to the metro area and southern Minnesota. Northern Minnesota has had clouds and scattered light snow. Winds have been…
Above-normal temperatures through Monday, then much colder
Mild temperatures continue Today will be our ninth consecutive day with warmer-than-normal temperatures. Daytime highs have been mostly quite mild for late December and cloud blankets have prevented most nights from cooling substantially. I expect this pattern to hold through next Monday. Wednesday High temperatures this afternoon should range from 25 to 30 in northern…
Highs in the 30s Wednesday; much colder in early January
It was great to see sunshine this Tuesday afternoon! We’ve had a lot of cloud cover lately, and we finally had an opportunity to see a sunset. In the Twin Cities, our sunset is now 7 minutes later than it was on December 15. That’s a nice start, but we won’t see sunsets at 5 p.m. until January 15.…
Much lighter winds; possible winter storm next Monday
We’ll all have a better hair day today! The low pressure system that delivered wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph to much of Minnesota yesterday is now sitting over southeastern Canada. We’ll have moderate winds today and tomorrow, with no strong weather systems nearby: The final image in the loop, which is Thursday morning, shows tighter isobars and increasing…
Wettest year in the Twin Cities; light winds for our Tuesday
Our weekend storm delivered .97 of an inch of rain to the official rain gauge at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. That is a lot of rain in December! It was enough rain to bring our 2016 precipitation total (rainfall plus the water content of every snowfall) to 40.32 inches. That makes this the wettest year ever…
