This month marks the 100th birthday of the great
Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Among the recordings marking the anniversary are two CDs that each bear evidence of the composer's struggle to hold onto artistic integrity under Stalin's oppression.
For Eliza Gilkyson, music is a family affair. Her father is songwriter Terry Gilkyson and her son Cisco Ryder is playing percussion on stage with her now.
Bob Adney is a percussion instructor at the MacPhail Center for Music. He's also a composer, and wrote what he calls a Construction Concerto to mark the MacPhail's groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday. Adney describes his approach to the piece.

Some of the more prominent figures in Minnesota music are throwing a concert to support a dear friend. Earlier this year, longtime First Avenue Stage Manager Conrad Sverkerson suffered a severe back injury, which left him out of work and without a paycheck for several weeks. "Conrad," as many refer to him, has become a beloved figure in the local scene by providing a friendly calm amid the chaos of the region's best-known nightclub.
At first Anastasia Khitruk thought he must be a contemporary composer who hadn't yet become well-known. Further research identified Ivan Khandoshkin as a musician who served at the imperial court of St. Petersburg, a virtuoso violinist and an accomplished composer who knew how to write challenging, yet entertaining, music.
