With global calls for immediate climate action rising, what role can cities play in fighting climate change?

The city of Minneapolis has been leading the way in answering this question. It was one of the first cities to introduce a climate action plan ten years ago. Now, it’s in the process of updating that plan, creating a new Climate Equity Plan — and it’s seeking community input.

Kate Knuth, a researcher for the 100% campaign, wrote a report on how cities across Minnesota are taking climate action. She said the updated version has a few notable differences.

The published draft sets a new goal “to significantly reduce climate pollution by 2030 and make the city carbon neutral by 2050,” aligning with global standards. It also places a greater focus on climate equity and reducing emissions generated from burning natural gas.

The city of Minneapolis officially opened its public online survey for the plan last week. It will remain available for residents through June 5.
