Architect Jean Nouvel paid special attention to how the Guthrie Theater will look at night, when people are most likely to be visiting. Ghostly images of past performances emerge from the darkness, appearing to float in the night sky.

The new Guthrie Theater opens this weekend. After more than 40 years on Vineland Place in Minneapolis, the Guthrie has moved to the banks of the Mississippi and into the international spotlight.

The new, blue building, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, sits on the riverfront in downtown Minneapolis.

To celebrate its new home, the theater will host a weekend full of events. Morning Edition's arts commentator Dominic Papatola talks about how the new, expanded Guthrie will impact the local arts scene.
