Going…going…

NOHRSC snow depth map shows southern extent of snow cover moving north.

You can hear the snow screaming like the Wicked Witch of the West. "I'm melting....MELTING."

Our higher March sun angle and a stiff south wind combined to eat away at snow in Minnesota today. Temperatures pushed 40 in the metro, as my weather lab thermometer peaked at 41.1 degrees in the shade at about 3:30pm.

In southern Minnesota where the sun angle is ever so slightly higher and there is less snow, Marshall hit 41. Jackson and Windom saw 43, and bank thermometers flashed 45 in Worthington and 46 in Pipestone.

The warmest air mass so far this year is poised to our south. I saw 70's in Nebraska, 80's in Kansas and Gage in western Oklahoma saw 92 degrees today! If we get enough sun after a touch of morning fog and low clouds burn off, we should easily make 45 in the metro Thursday. If everything goes just right, upper 40's are possible. I think 50's will likely pop up somewhere in southern Minnesota tomorrow, with some 60's in Iowa.

Enjoy the warm up. It should last through Friday. The weekend looks a little unsettled as the models fight it out for a solution.

Enjoy the sound of water dripping from your roof!
