Airport using Twitter to communicate with travelers

The Minneapolis-St. Paul airport is using the Twitter social-networking service to send short text messages to folks who want to keep up with what's happening at the airport.

Tens of millions of passengers go through the airport every year, but so far, only about 100 people have signed up to receive the airport's Twitter messages, which are known as tweets. Airport spokesman Patrick Hogan expects Twitter could be quite useful for the airport and travelers.

"It's one more way to get quick messages out to people who may be traveling," Hogan said. "Some of the traditional methods take more time. If we rely on news entities or if we rely on people to go to our web site, it may or may not happen.

"But through Twitter, we can get quick messages out to people who are interested in the airport. That might help them have a better experience as they travel through the airport."
