U of M nets $5.1M to expand health data training

The University of Minnesota has been awarded a $5.1 million federal grant to train students to work in health care information technology.

The university says in a news release that it is leading a consortium that was awarded the grant by the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.

The university says the demand for the people with training in the handling of digital health care data is increasing with the rise of electronic patient records and prescriptions.

The Minnesota consortium also includes the College of St. Scholastica and the University of Minnesota-Crookston.

Together, the institutions will train professionals in six different specialties that take 6-24 months to complete. Courses begin in the fall of 2010.
