It's a recurring conversation -- revitalizing rural America -- and The Daily Circuit this morning had a good take on it. The show took off from Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack's public worrying about the relevance of rural and included Jack Geller, professor of rural sociology and head of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences at the University of Minnesota, Crookston; Chuck Hassebrook, executive director of the Center for Rural Affairs in Lyons, Nebraska, and Jeff Kletscher, mayor of Floodwood, Minn.
Check it out here and stay til the end to hear Geller say, "You can drag a plow from one border of Kansas to the other, or Iowa as well. You can't do that in Minnesota." His point was that, in Minnesota anyway, there's rural and then there's rural, and there's no single fix for whatever ails rural America.
As one listener put it, "If you've seen one rural community you've seen ONE rural community."
