If you're not going to show up to accept a Nobel Prize for literature, this is the way to do it, 

 about singer Patti Smith's rendition of 

It could have been a cringe worthy moment when she lost the words at the weekend gala, but it turned out to be a rather perfect moment of grace.

Her audience lifted her back up. There's a metaphor there somewhere.

"I started crying almost immediately," Amanda Petrusich writes on 

the New Yorker website. When Smith lost the words, she cried more, she writes.

"It combines his Rimbaudian mastery of language with a deep understanding of the causes of suffering and ultimately human resilience," Smith told 

"As a performer I've played for 50,000 people and I've played for 50 people and I can tell you that it is harder to play for 50 people," Dylan said in 

. "50,000 people have a singular persona, not so with 50. Each person has an individual, separate identity, a world unto themselves. They can perceive things more clearly. Your honesty and how it relates to the depth of your talent is tried. The fact that the Nobel committee is so small is not lost on me."
