Frampton's talkbox featured in Bon Jovi's number one hit

Today's Morning Edition music is from "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi which was number one on the Billboard pop chart 30 years ago today.

The song was recorded using a talkbox — a device that was connected to Richie Sambora's guitar.

The sound from the guitar is fed through a plastic tube into Sambora's mouth. By changing the shape of his mouth, Sambora can alter the sound which is then picked up by a regular microphone.

Peter Frampton, who famously used the device on his "Frampton Comes Alive" album, custom built the talkbox for Bon Jovi.
