Each year Macalester College’s Residential Life team navigates a two-week intensive training for the student staff (Resident Assistants or RAs). Throughout training, we hold time and space to unpack different social identities, converse about what it means to be a social justice educator, and working with students navigating different academic and health-related concerns. Each of our 35 undergraduate student leaders is empowering, witty, smart, caring, fabulous, and amazing change-agents. It is an absolute honor, privilege, and gift to work with each of these young-adults.

This photo exemplifies the love and compassion we have for one another throughout each academic semester / year. There are a plethora of tough times that take place in-and-out of academia, so making time to intentionally pause, reflect, smile, and laugh is essential; particularly when working to serve so many students (almost 1,300).

The Coalition for Sexuality and Gender Identities (CSGI) is a subgroup affiliated with ACPA: College Student Educators International. Each year the Directorate spends a couple of days meeting, planning, and organizing initiatives for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Asexual, Pansexual, etc. graduate students and professionals. The initiatives that come to fruition before and during our annual Convention include, but are not limited to, Identity Socials, a Cabaret Drag Show, publications within our Intersections Magazine, and ongoing advocacy work related to challenging systems of oppression, homophobia, racism, misogyny, and working for and with folks with historically marginalized identities.

This photo exemplifies the leadership team that works for 10-11 months to serve the CSGI Membership and the larger ACPA Membership. We all come from different backgrounds, lived-experiences, locations, and educations, but we work together as a loving family advocating, educating, and supporting liberation.

Timberwolf CrossFit, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota is an amalgamation of folks from different backgrounds, ages, professions, and athletic abilities, but there is one thing that brings us together: A strong sense of community. Timberwolf Crossfit is community fitness. It is a place you can feel welcome, whether you are a stay at home mom, a professional athlete, or someone just trying to achieve a higher fitness level. We work hard and have fun doing it.

This photo exemplifies some of the Timberwolf family after completing the workout ‘Murph’: 1 Mile Run, 100 Pull-Ups, 200 Push-Ups, 300 Air-Squats, and 1 Mile Run; for time. Lt. Murphy was an avid adherent of CrossFit, and after his death one of his favorite workouts was named after him. Thus, thousands of CrossFit gyms around the world typically navigate this workout each Memorial Day. Folks are encouraged to use a weight-vest during the workout (14lbs for women and 20lbs for men), but it is not required.

Murph, like many workouts within CrossFit, is physically and mentally challenging, but we complete it not only for the fitness, but for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we can continue to live life the way we choose to live.
