Alpine skiing is often referred to as downhill skiing. So you might want to plan an adventure to a local skiing resort.

But if you're interested in competing, Midwest Masters is a nonprofit aimed at helping Adult Alpine skiiers from age 18 to over 80. They can help connect you to a local racing event or organization in the state.

Midwest Masters is also associated with NASTAR, a national ski and snowboard racing program that allows racers to compete in more than 100 resorts around the country, including six resorts in Minnesota.

Speed skating

Ski jumping

Minnesota boasts a handful of ski jumping clubs:

The St. Paul Ski Club, with facilities in Maplewood, has jumps ranging from 5 meters to 46 meters.

The Minneapolis Ski Club operates the Bush Lake Ski Jump at Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington. Train on 10-, 25- and 75-meter jumps.

The Itasca Ski & Outing Club offers training and competition on 10-, 20-, 40- and 70-meter jumps. The Mt. Itasca Winter Sports Center is near Grand Rapids, Minn.

Oddly enough, your best chance to try out luge will be this summer in Minneapolis. But only if you're between 9 and 13 years old.

Team USA Luge hosts a national recruitment tour for the team to help identify, train and qualify young athletes to the USA Luge Junior Development Team. Registration to the event is not yet open, but the event is set for June 2 and 3 from 9 a.m to noon or 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Riverside Park on the access ramp from East Franklin Avenue to West River Parkway.

There are 27 curling clubs within the state of Minnesota, according to the Minnesota Curling Association. Many of the clubs offer multiple "learn to curl" events that will help you learn the basics before you decide to join a club.

Some clubs are also willing to host private learn-to-curl events if there's a large enough crowd. Check out this list of curling clubs in the state.

Fun fact: four of five members of Team USA's men's curling team and three members from the women's curling team play in a club in Minnesota. That's 70 percent from the North Star State.

Biathlon

The Minnesota Biathlon offers novice events to allow those who want to try the sport. The Minnesota Cup will be held at Mt. Itasca at Coleraine, Minn. The event will host a novice race for anyone who wants to try. They recommend those 13 years of age or older, but no shooting experience is needed, and rifles and ammo are provided.

Brian Wray of Minnesota Biathlon said the club plans to host events in the spring and summer, and the club will publish more information on the website as dates are established.

"Olympic years always produce a very strong interest in our little sport," Wray said.

Martin and Lewis Sundquist grew up skiing at Hyland Hills in Bloomington, and made the U.S. Ski team in 1991, touring and competing in the event for 8 years. That's when they decided to start Nybora.

"We have anywhere from about 80 to 100 kids in our program each year, ages 6 to 18," Martin Sundquist told Plymouth Magazine in 2017.

Young athletes can try out the big air, slopestyle, halfpipe and moguls events.

There's also a freestyle terrain park at Lusten Mountain in Cook County.

The Twin City Figure Skating Association has a list of 20 active figure skating clubs available on their website.
