North of Grand Marais along Highway 61, a white clapboard church stands as one of the only reminders of what was once a small community called Chippewa City.
While the village is now gone, it was once home to about 200 predominantly Native American families. Their stories are told in the book “Walking the Old Road: A People's History of Chippewa City and the Grand Marais Anishinaabe.”
MPR News host Cathy Wurzer talked with author Staci Lola Drouillard about the book and her family’s connection to Chippewa City.
