Tuesday brings a balmy air mass and what could be the last 80-degree day for the Twin Cities and parts of southern Minnesota. Enjoy the red shades across southern Minnesota on Tuesday’s high-temperature map. We may not see them again for a few months.
Then a cold front Tuesday evening could spark a line of strong thunderstorms across eastern Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Behind the front, the season’s coldest air mass looks ready to descend across Minnesota through the upcoming weekend. Gusty northwest winds will drive a bracing air mass into Minnesota later this week.

Temperatures tumble through the 60s and 50s across Minnesota Wednesday. By Thursday, highs will struggle to reach 50 degrees in the south.
Hard freeze Friday?
The coldest temperature so far this season at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was 34 degrees last Saturday morning. We could go lower by Friday morning. Lows Friday will reach the 20s across most of our state.
The inner Twin Cities core could cling to temperature in the lower 30s.
Temperatures will recover slightly into the 50s Saturday. But another cold front surging south should keep temperatures in the 40s south and 30s north by Sunday.
There is some hint the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota could warm back into the 60s toward the middle of next week.
