Storm reports: Baseball-sized hail and high winds Wednesday

Massive hail in Itasca County. 65 mph winds in the northern Twin Cities.

The forecast for potentially severe storms in Minnesota Wednesday panned out.

Numerous severe thunderstorms rolled across Minnesota Wednesday afternoon and evening. The line of storms approached the Twin Cities early Wednesday evening.

Hail the size of baseballs pelted areas near Marcell in Itasca County.

The hailstones measured about 2.5 inches in diameter. Check out the photos sent to the Duluth NWS office.

There are scattered reports of some wind damage like this image from Watertown, Minnesota.

And some locations picked up meaningful rain under the stronger storms like this observer near Buffalo west of the Twin Cities.

  • Marcell [Itasca Co, MN] Public reports Hail of baseball size (E2.75 inch) at 19 Jul, 4:15 PM CDT -- Report via social media with video. Observer reports they have broken windows and a dented car. Time estimated from radar.

  • 1 NNE Hermantown [St. Louis Co, MN] Trained Spotter reports Hail of quarter size (M1.00 inch) at 19 Jul, 7:00 PM CDT -- Spotter reports nickel to quarter sized hail.

  • NWS Duluth [St. Louis Co, MN] Official NWS Obs reports Hail of quarter size (M1.00 inch) at 19 Jul, 7:00 PM CDT -- Numerous hailstones with the largest stones up to quarter size.

  • 5 WSW Shell Lake [Washburn Co, WI] Trained Spotter reports Tstm Wnd Dmg at 5:40 PM CDT -- Spotter reports that several trees have been snapped. Some trees were snapped near the base while others were snapped near the top. The one tree that was snapped near the bottom has an estimated diameter of 10 inches. Time estimated from radar.

  • 4 SSW Shell Lake [Washburn Co, WI] Trained Spotter reports Hail of egg size (E2.00 inch) at 5:59 PM CDT -- Hail damage includes severe damage to garden and trees. Possible damage to cars and roof.

  • 2 SW Rice Lake [Barron Co, WI] Broadcast Media reports Hail of tennis ball size (M2.50 inch) at 19 Jul, 6:11 PM CDT -- Hail up to tennis ball size with hail breaking through a large retailers roof.

  • 1 SW Brooklyn Center [Hennepin Co, MN] ASOS reports Tstm Wnd Gst of M60 MPH at 6:45 PM CDT -- ASOS station KMIC Crystal AP.

  • Waverly [Wright Co, MN] Public reports Hail of golf ball size (E1.75 inch) at 6:00 PM CDT --

  • 3 WNW Anoka [Hennepin Co, MN] Broadcast Media reports Tstm Wnd Gst of M65 MPH at 6:33 PM CDT -- Also measured 62 mph at 630 pm.

Expect a quiet weather pattern to return Thursday and Friday with highs in the 70s north and 80s south.
