Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced Tuesday that he's appointing Robin Hutcheson to chair the Metropolitan Council, starting in December.

The Met Council is responsible for regional planning in the seven-county Twin Cities metro area, with a focus on transportation, wastewater, housing and aviation systems.

In his announcement, Walz said Hutcheson is a proven leader who has enhanced roadway safety while serving in senior positions at the U.S. Department of Transportation. She was appointed by former President Joe Biden and served as deputy assistant secretary for safety policy and as administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Hutcheson also served as public works director in Minneapolis. 

“From leading national transportation policy to improving infrastructure here in Minnesota, she has shown what it means to lead with collaboration, innovation, and heart,” Walz said in his announcement. “Her extensive experience will be invaluable as the Metropolitan Council continues its work to build a stronger, more connected, and more equitable region for all Minnesotans.”

In the announcement, Hutcheson said the Met Council “plays a vital role in shaping the future of our region.”

“I look forward to working alongside dedicated Council members, staff, local leaders, and residents to create opportunity for every community we serve,” she said.

Former Met Council Chair Charlie Zelle retired from the role in September. 

The Met Council has faced scrutiny in recent years over spending on public transit projects — including the 

extension of Green Line light rail service

 into the southwest metro — amid ridership that’s been slow to rebound following the COVID pandemic.
