As of Friday morning, there have been 10 cases of measles in Minnesota so far this year. While it might not seem like a lot, it’s a number that grew significantly within a week. 

According to the Minnesota Department of Health, the outbreak is centered in the Twin Cities, but public health officials are also watching a growing measles outbreak in northeastern North Dakota, just across the Red River from northwest Minnesota. At least 14 people had contracted the disease in North Dakota as of Friday.

Jessica Hancock-Allen, manager of the Minnesota Department of Health's infectious diseases division, said nine of the 10 cases are from one cluster that spread from one person to eight different family members and friends. 

She said vaccination is still the best method to mitigate. 

“It will spread in any setting where there are unvaccinated folks that get together; children are at particular risk,” Hancock-Allen said. “We do have this magical tool of vaccination that is highly, highly effective and protective.”
