Minnesota transportation officials closed southbound Interstate 35 south of Albert Lea on Sunday afternoon amid ongoing blizzard conditions.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation said that’s because officials in Iowa closed their portion of the freeway as winds increased and visibility decreased.
Iowa transportation officials said they closed I-35 between the Minnesota state line and Ames until conditions improve.
MnDOT continued to advise no travel across southern Minnesota as of late Sunday morning.

“Snowplows are having difficulty in current conditions but remain on the roads at this time. Current rates of snow are covering roads faster than snowplows can clear a driving lane,” MnDOT’s District 6, covering southeast Minnesota, reported as of 10 a.m.
To the north along I-35, officials in Steele County — which includes Owatonna — issued an alert advising no travel on all roads.
“Non-essential personnel should STAY OFF ROADS within Steele County to ensure your safety. Current road conditions pose significant risks to drivers and pedestrians,” county officials reported just after 10 a.m.
