President Donald Trump’s latest executive order is another attempt at reshaping U.S. elections.
The order directs the Department of Homeland Security to create a list all U.S. citizens who are able to vote and for the U.S. Postal Service to only send mail-in ballots to verified voters.
Minnesota is currently embroiled in a lawsuit with the DOJ over subpoenaed voter rolls in an unprecedented move by the federal government to gather wide swaths of data on voters.
Minnesota’s top election official, Secretary of State Steve Simon, said the order is unconstitutional and displays a pattern from the Trump administration of federal election interference. He also said that it’s not clear how feasible their plan is.
“Whether this is even constitutional, assuming, just for a moment it is, it's hard to imagine how this could be done in time,” Simon said. “There are so many moving parts here.”
