Tornado watch includes southern Minnesota until 10 p.m.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center has issued a tornado watch that includes southeastern Minnesota and parts of western Wisconsin until 10 p.m.

The watch zone includes areas just south of the Twin Cities through the Interstate 90 corridor into northern Iowa including Mankato, Owatonna, Waseca, Austin, Albert Lea, Rochester, Red Wing and Winona.

Severe storms with damaging winds, large hail 2 to 3 inches in diameter, and a few tornadoes are possible in the watch zone. Here’s the Storm Prediction Center information:

* Tornado Watch for portions of Northern Iowa Southern Minnesota Central Wisconsin Lake Michigan

* Effective this Monday afternoon and evening from 310 PM until 1000 PM CDT.

* Primary threats include... A few tornadoes likely with a couple intense tornadoes possible Widespread large hail and isolated very large hail events to 3 inches in diameter likely Scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible

SUMMARY...Thunderstorms are expected to rapidly develop this afternoon along a warm front across the watch area. Supercells capable of very large hail and tornadoes are possible. A strong tornado is possible. The tornado watch area is approximately along and 50 statute miles north and south of a line from 30 miles west northwest of Fairmont MN to 20 miles east northeast of Oshkosh WI.
