 Sunday is being investigated as a domestic violence incident, according to police. The shooting is renewing attention to the pervasive problem of domestic violence in the U.S.

, a Burnsville-based nonprofit, spoke with Cathy Wurzer on MPR News' Morning Edition about the causes of domestic violence, how to address abusers and what support is available to survivors.

“Abusers use power and control … to make them feel like they're big in their life,” Cihla said. “And domestic violence can take so many forms because of that; it can be financial control, physical control, threats, so many things, but it all comes down to power and control in the end.” 

360 Communities is in the middle of a $14 million capital campaign to build a new 

 in Eagan for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The organization aims to open the shelter by the end of 2027.
