Adoptable dogs and cats as well as livestock coming into Minnesota face new restrictions to keep a parasitic fly at bay. 

 Tuesday on animals coming from areas where there are active New World screwworm infestations, including Texas and New Mexico. 

Dr. Brian Hoefs, executive director of the board and Minnesota’s state veterinarian, told Morning Edition it’s easier to detect screwworm in livestock compared with wild animals, “but certainly it causes some pain and anguish to the animals in the meantime.”

The restriction for companion animals in the United States is an expansion of existing restrictions on other countries with New World screwworm is active, Hoefs said.

For rescues, “we're just asking people to make sure these animals are evaluated” and have a certificate of veterinary inspection before coming to Minnesota, he added.
