Alaska State Troopers say Brittany Boegel of Minnesota died Wednesday when she was crushed by falling ice in Portage Valley, about 45 miles southeast of Anchorage.
A firefighter who has been working on draining the water said that levels in parts of a passage leading to a chamber where the boys and the coach were found after missing for 10 days was still flooded all the way to the ceiling, making diving the only way out.
"It was kind of a miracle that nobody was killed," one resident said. Fireworks shows have become much safer since Duluth's 1988 show ended in an explosion.
