Republican Stacey Stout wins a north metro state House seat

MPR News StaffUpdated:

Per the Associated Press, with 100% of precincts reporting, Republican Stacey Stout defeated Democrat Angela Thompson in a race for state House. Stout retained Republican control of a seat held by state Rep. Patti Anderson, who decided not to run for reelection. Stout is an attorney and has served as Mahtomedi’s school board chair.

Correction (Nov. 4, 2026): An earlier version of this story included an inaccurate political affiliation for state Rep. Patti Anderson and misrepresented what that meant in this race. It also misspelled both candidates’ names.

St. Paul approves ‘right to repair’ ordinance

Lili Euzet

St. Paul voters on Tuesday approved a landmark right-to-repair ordinance that will allow renters to deduct repair costs from their rent if landlords do not respond to the issue within 14 days.

The cost limit for repair reimbursements is $500 or one half of the tenant’s monthly rent, whichever is greater. Renters will be allowed to execute simple repairs themselves, but more difficult or technical work will have to be performed by licensed professionals.

The measure, initiated by the group Safe Homes St. Paul, passed easily — nearly 80 percent support with 82 precincts reporting.

The measure will affect the nearly half of the city’s residents who rent their homes, according to the most recent U.S. Census survey.

St. Paul tenants will be able to give their landlords a written notice detailing the repair needed and their intention to expense its cost if no action is taken. Landlords will then have 14 days to schedule or perform the repair.

More than half of the city’s residential housing units are close to or over 100 years old, according to Safe Homes Saint Paul, which backed the measure.

The initiative encountered opposition from business groups including the St Paul Area Chamber, and from the St. Paul City Council, which voted in August to keep the measure off the ballot even though Safe Homes St. Paul had gathered enough signatures for it.

Whether the right to repair question would be up for debate in the election went all the way to the Minnesota Supreme Court, which allowed it to stay on the ballot. But the ordinance’s fate wasn’t decided until Monday, when the Minnesota Court of Appeals upheld the state Supreme Court ruling.

Duluth was the first city in Minnesota to pass a similar measure last November.

Democrat Matt Little wins Minnesota's open 2nd District seat

MPR News Staff

Democrat Matt Little on Tuesday won Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District, a seat that came open after U.S. Rep. Angie Craig gave up the seat to run for her party’s U.S. Senate nomination.

Little, an attorney and former state senator, defeated Republican state Sen. Eric Pratt, in the district that stretches from the southern Twin Cities suburbs into farm country. He had about 57 percent of the vote Tuesday in unofficial results.

Little served as a DFL state senator for a single term ending in early 2021 and was mayor of Lakeville prior to that.

In a debate hosted by MPR News, Little pitched himself as someone who would stand up to the Trump administration.

DFLer Klobuchar wins Minnesota governor's race

MPR News Staff

After a career breaking barriers in Minnesota politics, Minnesota U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar broke another on Tuesday night, becoming the state’s first woman elected governor.

Klobuchar, Minnesota’s senior U.S. senator and a former county prosecutor, jumped into the race late after and campaigned on a message of ending fraud in state government and making the state work better for its citizens.

Her background working across the political aisle in Washington and campaigning across each of Minnesota’s 87 counties helped her pick up the support she needed to overcome a challenge from Republican Lisa Demuth, the speaker of the Minnesota House.
