It’s Grandma’s weekend in Duluth. But for some businesses, a worker shortage cramps the fun

It will be busy on the North Shore this weekend, as runners and fans flock to Two Harbors and Duluth for the annual Grandma’s Marathon.

Because of COVID-19, about 10,000 runners are signed up for this year’s events — half as many as usual. But the race is still expected to funnel millions of dollars towards local businesses. That is, if those businesses are open.

The historic Pickwick Restaurant and Pub stands near Mile 24 on the racecourse, but it will be closed Saturday through Monday, due in large part to a shortage of staff.

MPR News host Cathy Wurzer talked with Pickwick co-owner and manager Amy Wright about the situation.
