Remember how you pined for summer during Minnesota’s frigid April? Well, it’s payback time.

Friday and Saturday bring pleasantly warm summer days. But Sunday’s hot front will leave no doubt that summer weather is here.

Highs Sunday will push to near 100 degrees in western Minnesota, with 90s eastward. There will be some comfort in the usually cooler refuge in northeast Minnesota.

By Monday, highs in the 90s will fill most of Minnesota, with temperatures pushing 100-across much of central and southern Minnesota. Monday has a shot to be the hottest day of the year in most of Minnesota. Let’s hope so.

The last time the Twin Cities hit 100 degrees was four years ago, May 28, 2018. Last year MSP Airport peaked at 99 degrees on June 5.

Here’s more on the frequency of 100-degree days in Minnesota.

The last time the mercury hit 100 degrees at the Twin Cities International Airport was on May 28, 2018 with 100 degrees.

It's been relatively uncommon to see the mercury reach 100 at the Twin Cities International Airport in recent years. Before 2018, the last time the air temperature reached 100 degrees was on July 6, 2012 with 102 degrees. Before that, the last time the maximum temperature was 100 degrees or more was on June 7, 2011 with 103 degrees. Looking back to 1873, the maximum temperature at the Twin Cities official measuring site has reached 100 or more on 66 occasions. The most was in 1936 with nine days.

Twice in one week, the mercury hit 100 degrees or higher at the Twin Cities International Airport in July 2012. The last time there were more than two 100 degree maximum temperatures in the Twin Cities in a year was 1988, when there were four.

And though the heat will ease across northern Minnesota Tuesday, temperatures in the 90s will stick around the Twin Cities. You can see just how massive this heat dome is across most of the eastern 2/3 of the nation Tuesday.

Some relief is in the forecast starting next Wednesday. But temperatures will still run in the upper 80s in southern Minnesota to near 90 around the Iowa border.

After a cool La Nina spring, it’s beginning to look like we could see a transition into a potentially hot summer across the Upper Midwest.
