Winter storm warnings in northern Minnesota

Very mild temps are back for Monday. A big spring storm system will bring a variety precipitation types including heavy wet snow for many Tuesday into Wednesday.

Mild air ahead of a big spring storm system 

After a cool first half of the weekend, warmer air is back Monday. We’ll see highs in the 50s across southern Minnesota to near 60 for some. Northern Minnesota will see highs well into the 40s. We should have sun much of the morning with increasing afternoon clouds Monday.

Some spotty light rain showers are possible Monday afternoon for eastern and central Minnesota. That could transition to some light freezing rain for Duluth and the North Shore Monday night with additional rain showers south. 

There’s some uncertainty as to whether the Duluth area receives ice or if it remains more on the Iron Range and portions of the North Shore Monday night:

That’s just the first round of moisture ahead of a big spring storm system. We’ll see scattered rain showers Tuesday for much of the state transitioning to snow during the day in western and northern Minnesota as colder air moves in. 

Precipitation turns to all snow for the entire state Tuesday night into Wednesday. 

A winter storm watch is posted for 9 p.m. Tuesday through 3 p.m. Wednesday with winter weather advisories in the Arrowhead. Blizzard conditions could be possible for southern Minnesota along Interstate 90.

Winds will increase Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday with gusts as high as 40 to 50 mph across southern Minnesota. Power outages are possible given the wind and along with heavy wet snow sticking to tree branches.

Eastern and southern Minnesota into Wisconsin look poised to see the most snowfall where more than several inches could fall of heavy, wet snow wrapping up late Wednesday. 

Importantly, this system could deliver more than an inch of liquid-equivalent precipitation to southeastern Minnesota after what’s been a dry winter. 

Temperatures will be colder Wednesday, mainly in the 30s and 20s, and it will also be windy. Winds late Tuesday into Wednesday will be 15 to 30 mph from the northwest with gusts of 40 to 45 mph. 

We’re then in for a rapid spring warmup with 50s and 60s by Sunday into early next week.
