Wildflower chasers: A creekside hunt for marigolds

On nearly 50 acres, sprawling with trees and creeks, sits a hub of many flora. For wildflower chasers Phyllis Root and Kelly Povo, it’s a dream come true.
“What a place,” Root said.
“It’s like a little kid’s wonderland,” Povo added.
Their latest adventure took them just south of Fremont in Winona County. There, they entered the Coolidge Creek Aquatic Management Area. Through steep hills and muddy waters, Povo and Root persisted.

“I can do this,” Root said. “It's not like I haven’t fallen in the muck before.”
And finally, after stopping by a river, they found a sprawling bed of marsh marigolds. Bright yellow flowers with heart-shaped leaves.
“I love seeing them in the spring, because they’re just, like, cheery,” Root said.
